SIGHTS TO SEE:

If you feel like getting out, there are plenty of beautiful spots well within a short drive of Forbes. Here, you can smell the gum leaves and grass and know that you're in the bush. Pack a tent and a sleeping bag and go camping, or just take a day trip.

JEMALONG WEIR:

In this shaded area on the edge of the Lachlan River you can enjoy a picnic, throw a ball or a fishing line, take a walk in the riverside bush or simply watch the flow of water through the weir. 24 kms along the South Condobolin Road on the right hand side heading towards Condobolin. BBQ and Picnic facilities with toilets. Extensive wildlife and bird life can be seen.

Easy access, close to town - a relaxing tranquil spot. Located off River Road.

WEDDIN MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK:

Heavily timbered, with a few walking tracks. Here, Ben Hall's cave is nestled in the bush and worth a visit for a sense of history. Legend has it that much of the gold is hidden in the hills 50kms from Forbes on the Road to Grenfell.
Picnic facilities available at the end of Holy Camp Road.

NANGAR NATIONAL PARK:

The Nangar / Murga range is a landmark in the flat central west. Its forests, rich in flowering shrubs, are important wildlife refuge in a landscape that is largely cleared. Interesting walks and views from the escapement. Best access from Eugowra 15klms. GOOBANG NATIONAL PARK:

Located near Peak Hill. There are examples of both eastern and western flora and fauna. Visitors can go picnicking, walking and bush camping in the park. Located 30 klms north east of Parkes on the Wellington Road. Further information contact the Forbes Office on 02 68514429.

CONIMBLA NATIONAL PARK:

One of the "bush islands" of the central west, forest surrounded by farming lands. Enjoy spectacular views from Ironbark 3walking track, or bird watch along the Wallaby track. Bush camping. STATE FORESTS:

Back Yamma......Off Parkes Road, 15 kilometres
Cumbijowa......Off Cowra Road, 10 kilometres

Wander through this timbered land, and enjoy being there without a crowd. Have a picnic, explore the bush or take some photos. Sit quietly at sunrise and sunset and you may see kangaroos or some of the many other forms of native wildlife that frequent these areas.

LAKE COWAL:

Largest freshwater lake in New South Wales.
Home and breeding ground to a wide variety of bird life. Bring your binoculars and your camera to this vast inland lake. Access is via the Newell Highway 60kms south/west of Forbes.

ESCORT ROCK:

Have a picnic on the site of a Gold Robbery. Here, in 1862, the Gardiner Gang held up the gold escort which was travelling from Forbes to Bathurst. In quantity, the amount stolen was perhaps something like that of the Great Train Robbery in Britain! The Rock has picnic facilities and is situated 3 kilometres east of Eugowra on the Orange Road.
