A WALK THROUGH HISTORY:

Being in Forbes, (known as Blackridge in 1861), means being in the middle of history. The town's early beginnings as a gold rush centre have left it with many marks of those rich, bustling days.

The explorer, John Oxley, arrived at the present site of Forbes in 1817. This was the official beginning of white settlement in the town, but its boom took place only after gold was discovered here in 1861.

Along with gold came a massive change to the nature of the town and its people. The gold rush fever brought 30,000 to 40,000 newcomers to the town - which soon began to look like a tent city.

Robbery and criminal activities grew alongside the gold fever. Several of the law breakers became bushrangers and their deeds began to rewrite history. Robberies and other criminal activities gave locals a sense of fear as these rugged bush lords made their mark on the district.

Some of Australia's most notorious bushrangers, Ben Hall and the "Gardiner Gang", lived and robbed in the Forbes District. One of the most daring robberies was the 1862 hold-up of the Gold Escort travelling from Forbes to Bathurst. In 1865, at the age of 27, Ben Hall was shot by police near Forbes, but mystery still surrounds him and his legend lives on.

The Forbes History book was launched by Hon Bob Carr, Premier of N.S.W in March 1998. This 600 page, detailed book of the life and history of the town and people is available from Council or local newsagencies. This publication was nominated for the 1998 Premiers Award.
